Sunburst Platy (Xiphophorus Maculatus)


Overview: The Livebearer group includes four larger families: Four-eyed Fish (Anablepidae), Halfbeaks (Hemirhamphidae), Mexican Topminnows (Goodeidae), and Live-bearing Toothcarps (Poecilliidae). The Platy is a livebearing Toothcarps and belongs to the Poecilliidae family. It is the largest of the four families and contains nearly 200 species, including several other well-known aquarium species, such as Molly, Guppy and Swordtail.

Feeding: Omnivore
Behavior & Care: Easy to care for, great for beginners. Hardy, and can adapt to many types of water. They have a very inquisitive personality, and will explore all levels of the tank.


Gold twinbar platy

Gold Twinbar Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus)


Overview: The Gold Twin Bar Platy has a beautiful, translucent golden body with two black bars along the top and bottom of its tail. These black bars form the distinct open "V" pattern characteristic to this platy variety.

Behavior & Care: Peaceful; easy to care for
Breeding: The Gold Twin Bar Platy is a livebearer capable of reproducing at three to four months of age. The male is smaller and more brightly colored than the female and can be distinguished by his gonopodium. The fry will most often reach maturity in a community aquarium.


Mickey Mouse platy

Mickey Mouse Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus)


Overview: Believe it or not, everyone doesn't immediately see where this fish gets its name. Look closely at the tail area, and it will soon become obvious. Near the base of the tail is a large round spot upon which are perched two smaller round 'ears' that give it the spitting image of the popular Disney character, Mickey Mouse.

Feeding: Omnivore
Behavior & Care: Like other platys the Mickey Mouse Platy tolerate a wide range of conditions, and are suitable for even small aquariums. They will graze on vegetation, so keep that in mind if you have live plants. The ideal substrate is small to medium sized and darker in color, which also serves as a good contrast to show off the pretty colors of this fish
